Tangents: Vacay Style

Ew, yeah, I forgot about the whole “when you don’t run for a long time and then start running again your legs are really sore” thing.  I woke up this morning, got out of bed to turn off the alarm and realized “OW, my legs hurt.”  So I gave myself a day off and went back to bed.  The end.

I’ll resume normal workout activities tomorrow, promise!

Since there’s not workout to yammer on about, this post is going to be random tangents about my upcoming vacay to Sanibel Island.

1)   I’m a little bit nervous about 4 days of laying in the sun.  I’m sure you’re like, “um why?”  It’s because I am the whitest, palest person you will ever meet, and when I’m out in the sun for more than an hour I have a tendency to fry in weird places (think splotchy).  This is even when I’m wearing 80 SPF.  So I’m always apprehensive about being out in the sun for too long.  I do my due diligence and apply lots and lots of sunscreen, but sometimes it doesn’t seem to work for me.  What’s up with that?  So I’m going to be extra careful this year and reapply often and liberally.  Because last year’s burn was a travesty – but I blame spray sunscreen for last year.

2)   Because of said paleness, I have been slathering on the self tanner this week.  I don’t want to blind anyone in Sanibel when I take off my beach cover up.  It seems to be working.  I’m now a nice shade of light beige, which is an improvement from whitest white.  I don’t use full on self tanner because that stuff scares me and makes me look unnaturally “tan” (but not really).  I use the gradual stuff.  This Banana Boat Sunless Color stuff is my fave!

3)   Because of said self tanning, I stink.  All the time.  Why does self tanner smell so funky?  Wait, don’t answer that, I probably don’t want to know what it’s doing to my body.  I feel like I have to apologize to people who sit next to me because I smell so weird.  Seriously, what is that smell?  Ugh.  Aaand now I can smell myself and it’s starting turn my stomach.  Bleh.

4)     I finished my 4th Nook book in 2 months last night.  The Nook makes me a reading machine.  I bought a new Nook book to read on the beach, aptly titled The Beach Club (by Elin Hilderbrand).   It sounds like the perfect “beach read.”  Can’t wait to start it.  She doesn’t write a bad book – I’ve read most of hers, all excellent.

5)   We’re going to a restaurant called The Bubble Room while we’re in Sanibel.  You might have heard of it from when this gal went there. (One day I’m going to bump into Julie in Sanibel and it will make my life.  I just love her.)  It’s cray cray there.  Like tchotchkies threw up crazy. The d├ęcor is so off the wall, but they have the bestest thing there, it’s called Bubble Bread and it’s this giant piece of cheesy garlicky yummy bread (you can see a pic of it in Julie’s post).  I am toying with just having Bubble Bread as my dinner.  And dessert.  The rest of the menu is just “eh”, but the Bubble Bread is the best.

6)   I still haven’t packed for the weekend yet.  Not that I pack a ton – shorts, bathing suit, cover up, done.  It’s the other stuff that I want to make sure I don’t forget like Nook (duh), iPod, running clothes, food from our pantry for breakfasts and snacks.  We stay in a condo that has a full kitchen, so we always end up buying food down there which is super expensive because there is one grocery store on the island (Jerry’s) and it’s muy expensivo.  This year I plan to clear out our pantry and take it with us.  Economical, and I won’t miss a meal.  Yes!

7)   Hubs has started his own RWRunStreak thing.  He originally wanted to run 1 mile a day, every day between Memorial Day and Labor Day.  Well, he didn’t start on Memorial Day, he started on Tuesday and ran a mile.  On Wednesday he was too sore to do anything, so he skipped a day.  He’s now modified his streak to run a mile every other day.  So, I told him that we HAD to go out and run (or walk for me) on the beach or around Sanibel at least once during our vacay.  Usually we are uber lazy when we are there, and I always look at it as a missed opportunity to run on the beach or a pretty tropical locale (since we don’t live anywhere near a beach).  So this year we are doing it!  (stay tuned to see if we actually do it)

PowerPoint is fun
OK, now I must stop daydreaming about the beach and get to work. GAH!  Have a fabulous day!

Questions for you …
- Have you ever run on the beach?
- Do you tan easily?

We Bought a Zoo

OK, wait, no we didn’t.  But we watched the movie We Bought a Zoo!

We’ve had the movie We Bought a Zoo from Netflix for like 2 weeks, and Hubs and I have been kind of “eh” about watching it.  We didn’t really know what it was about, and we thought it sounded kind of cheesy, so we kept putting it off.  Last night we finally watched it and holy cow, it was excellent!!  I was so pleasantly surprised at how warm and fuzzy and wonderful this movie was.  I loved it.  At the end of the movie, we both looked at each other and said “I am SO glad we watched that.”  It was super!  Go rent it.  So good!!

Also good, my workout today!  I did Day 2 of C25K – intervals of 60 seconds running and 90 seconds walking – but this time I did it outside.  Man, it was good!  I did a 5 minute warm up and then did the intervals for 20 minutes straight and then walked the last 5 minutes.  Towards the end I was getting a little tired and noticed my foot dragging a bit, but outside of that my foot and ankle were working like a champ.  Very little pain and very little foot drag.  Pain is a bad way to describe it because it doesn’t hurt anymore, it’s just a weird feeling - a nuisance.  Anyway, the workout was fab.  I’m going to take tomorrow off of running and just do elliptical, to give my ankle a rest, and then do workout 3 of week one on Friday.  And I think I am going to do week one of the program again next week.  I’m not sure I’m ready to graduate to longer running intervals just yet.  I don’t want to hurt anything, ya know?

And another good thing today (I’m just full of happiness today) – my physical therapy appointment.  Today was technically my last PT appointment until I go to the Orthopaedic again next Tuesday.  My Physical Therapist said that she can see definite improvement in the strength of my foot and my measurements.  She redid my measurements (so that she could share my progress with the doctor) and she said I had improvement across the board.  Woohoo!  She said I am still really tight in my calves, but I went from a -12 mobility in my left foot to a -4 mobility.  “Normal” is +10, so I have a ways to go, but at least I am making progress.  YES!  And, just to be able to run again without pain is enough for me to deem the PT a success, so I am just super happy about everything right now and hope to continue on with this.  YAY!

Shar asked me a while back to post some of my PT exercises that I am doing, so here we go….

The first three exercises require a pillow (to elevate my foot off of the ground) and a resistance band.  The tighter the better.

This first one has me looping the resistance band around the top of my foot and then tying the other end of the band around the leg of our coffee table.  Then I position myself where the band is really taught (no give) and I start in the pointed position and then flex my foot up towards my face.  Good stretch.  I have to concentrate on not letting my foot turn inward, so it takes a lot for me to keep it straight.

The next one is kind of the opposite of the last one.  I switch the band around to where I am holding the band and pulling it taught and then I start in a flex position and point my foot downward, like I’m mashing on the accelerator of a car.  Again, gotta keep my foot from turning inward.

The next one helps me build strength in my ankle.  I hold the band towards to right, really taught, and flex my foot to the left and back to center.

The next one is calf stretch with a  towel.  I’m sure you’ve done this one before.

And calf raises.  I swear, over the last few weeks I have done many, many calf raises and I must say my calves are starting to look nice!  Haha.

The next three are to strengthen my hips and no resistance band is required.  This one I lay down, bend my right knee up and then raise my left leg up to knee level and then back down.  At home this is easy, at PT she adds an ankle weight, which makes it a workout.

This one is your typical hip abductor exercise (leg raises or “Jane Fondas” as my old personal trainer used to call them).  The trick though, keep your hips stacked and your foot FLEXED.  This is hard for me.  Again, in PT she adds weight and ooh boy, my leg is screaming at the end.

The last one is to strengthen the back of the leg.  Face down, lift your leg.  But engage your glute each time.  This makes it harder.

These are just my “week one” exercises (that I still do everyday).  I have a bunch of other ones that I will share later.  I don’t have pictures of those at the moment.  So feel free to try them out and strengthen your ankles/legs/hips with these little gems along with me.  It’ll be FUN!

Alright, I should get going.  Have a wonderful rest of the day!

Questions for you ...

Couch to 5K - Day One

Hello!  And happy Monday Tuesday!  It sure feels like a Monday.  Sheesh.

First off, I have to tell Shar that you made me cry this morning.  Your comment on the last post about poor little Simba made me burst into tears.  I am so so sorry to hear Simba went to kitty heaven this past weekend.  L  I know he was going through rough times, but it’s still so sad to hear that he lost his battle.  Stories like that just break my heart because my Zeus is 16 and I know we’re going to have to face him leaving us sometime soon, and I honestly cannot even bear the thought of that.  I’m tearing up just thinking about that.  So my sympathies go out to you guys.  How are the kiddos dealing with it?  Do you still have your other kitty?

OK, enough cat talk.  This morning I RAN!!!  And it was fabulous!!!  I decided to start my foray back into running, and because it’s been SO long and I have to take it SO slow and easy, I have decided to totally start over and use the Couch to 5K program as a way to build up my stamina and get me back to running distance.  So today was my “Day One” and I did 60 second running sprees with a 90 second walk on the treadmill.  And I am happy to report that there was very little pain in my ankle.  WOO!!  I’m not saying it was 100%, but I’ll give it a 90.7% “back to normal” rating.  I still felt a little uncomfortable-ness, but it wasn’t anything that would keep me from running more.  So YEA!!!!!  It felt so so so good to run again.

My whole workout was just great today.  I haven’t worked out since last Thursday due to pure laziness. (sooo dumb, I should know better!)  And I ate pretty much everything in sight this weekend, so this morning when I woke up I felt so bloated and icky and like I gained about 10 lbs over the weekend.  And man, did a workout help make me feel normal again.  Thank goodness.  I thought I was going to pop.  Seriously.  In addition to my running/walking, I did 10 minutes on the bike and 15 on the elliptical and then did a quickie arm and leg workout that looked like this….

ExerciseWeightRepsSets
Front Shoulder Raises10 lbs103
Bicep Curl w/ Twist10 lbs103
Tricep Kickbacks10 lbs103
Shoulder Presses10 lbs103

I have to be in bathing suit shape by Friday, so you can bet I will be working hard this week.  Think I can do it?  I’m skeptical.  EEK!

This Friday we leave for Sanibel Island and I am so excited to get away for a few days.  There is pretty much nothing to do in Sanibel except lounge in the sun and enjoy the beach, so I am really looking forward to that.  There is talk about renting bicycles and riding around the island, but since I don’t ride a bicycle because of my accident, I am toying with trying out one of those three wheeler recumbent deals.

Haha, we’ll see if they have those to rent!  If so, I’m down!  But only if it has three wheels.  And only with a helmet of course!!

Now I just have to make it through the workweek!  Argh!  Hope your day is going great!

Questions for you …
- What was your workout today?
- Any good vacations coming up?

LAZY & FMM

Well hello there!  Happy Memorial Day!  I hope it’s  glorious day where you are!

Sorry I’ve been so silent for so long.  The word of the weekend has been L-A-Z-Y.  Whoa, lazy.  Like, sit on the couch, watch House Crashers and do nothing else lazy.  Lazy.  But fabulous at the same time.  Sometimes you just gotta lounge around on the couch all weekend, right?

And it hasn’t been all lazy all the time.  I did go out for a fabulous girls spa day yesterday! Two of my gal pals and I went and had lunch, took a trip to Ulta and then got manis and pedis.  Ultimate girlie day, so that was super fun and broke up the laziness a bit.

This morning Hubs and I had had enough of being totally useless, so at 6:30 (yes, a.m.)  when we woke up (seriously on holiday?!) Hubs had a good idea to get up, get dressed and go to Disney World before it opened.  Brilliant!  We haven’t done that in ages - where we got there when it opened.  So we got up, got some grub and headed out to Magic Kingdom.

We were there so early, they hadn’t even done the “Welcome” show yet (where some of the characters ride in on the train and do a little song and dance - yeah, I know it sounds cheesy), so we got to catch that, which is always a tad exciting.

After that we had one thing on the mind...

Get to Space Mountain as fast as we can before a line can form.  And we did it.  Only about a 10 minute wait.  After that we moseyed around the park and rode the newly reopened Thunder Mountain, saw the The Enchanted Tiki Room show (yes really) and then went home.  By that time we were hot, it was getting cloudy and we had pretty much done all we wanted to do.  Ah, the beauty of having an annual pass.  We were home by noon and then continued our laziness by eating hot dogs and chips on the couch and watching more house shows.  Happy Memorial Day!

And ya know what?  It’s Monday, even though it doesn’t feel like it.  So that means it’s Friend Makin Monday!  Woohoo!

Day Off Fun

I think I fell into a trap.

After months of not drinking diet soda, Sprite (or 7-Up) is calling to me. Over the weekend for my Dad’s birthday fiesta I bought a bunch of 2 liters of soda for our guests. Sprite being one of them.

Dude, Sprite is so good. It's crisp and tasty. I haven't had any sort of craving for bubbles or soda of any kind, but I had a sip of Hubs glass of Sprite and man it was good. So good that today when I was at Target this bottle of Diet 7-Up was calling to me. Sheesh. I only had a few swigs before I got a little "eh" about it, so I don't think I'm relapsing into my old soda ways, but I'm still not excited that I have had a craving for it, when I haven’t in so long. Eh, anyway.

Today has been a fantastic day!! Taking today off was such a great idea!! I slept in (7:45 is considered sleeping in), I watched thI hate the auditions), and then I laid out in the sun for a while in the backyard.

We're going to the beach next weekend and I felt the extreme need to lay out and at least get a little bit of color so I don't roast next weekend like I did last year.  Ugh.  Last year was a travesty.  We all got SO burnt that we couldn’t do anything the rest of the trip except stay indoors because the heat from the sun on our burns was too painful.  And we had worn sunscreen.  The sun is crazy strong y’all.

In preparation for our trip I bought all kinds of new sunscreen, all in the 45-70 SPF range.  I am not getting burnt again!  I also bought one of those nifty fans that spritzes water at you (I’ve always wanted one of those) to help us beat the heat.  And then I also bought one of these.

I'm cute and green
I’ve been in the market for a new workout iPod.  I have an iPod Touch that I use daily, but I don’t like to workout with it cuz it’s so clunky.  And I have an old Nano that I use for working out, but I wanted something a little smaller, so enter the tiniest little iPod they make.  I’m having fun loading this thing with my workout jams.

Alright, I should get going.  We are off on a dinner adventure tonight.  Talk to you later!

Questions for you …
- Did anyone take today off?
- Did you work out today?  (I did not)

Idol Finale!

Hey!  Happy Friday!  Oh, I mean Thursday.  I made an executive decision to take tomorrow off, based on reasons I discussed in yesterday’s post.  So today is my “Friday.”   I think it’s a super smart decision, and I immensely look forward to doing absolutely nothing tomorrow, at home.  YAY!

So…last night…YAY!

There were tears
P Squared took the crown!  This means I won the office pool (of nothing), so I get bragging rights all year.  Woo!  Anyhow, the whole finale show was just “meh.”  I was not a fan of most of the performances (hi, where was my Dave Matthews/Phillip Phillips daydream duet?).  I wish they’d get some younger, more relevant acts on the finale shows – we saw Chaka Khan (who seemed drunk), John Fogerty (from CCR, who sang with Phillip, which I loved, but still, old), Jennifer Holliday (who, was just way scary and we thought she was actually going to swallow little Jessica whole), Neil Diamond…like seriously some of these kids’ parents weren’t even born when some of these people were relevant.  It was just odd.

There was a fair share of new acts – Fantasia (which scared the bejeezus out of me), Rihanna (ugh), J-Lo (who looked hot but was lip syncing) and Aerosmith (old too, but relevant).  But yeah, the whole show was just OK.  I didn’t really get excited until the last 7 minutes of the show when the winner was crowned.

Then this happened, which made the girls in my house (and my friends whom I was texting with all night) burst into tears.  During his final song, post-coronation, he broke down in tears, abandoned his guitar, quit the song and left the stage to hug his family.  Seriously, we were crying.  Classic ending to the season.
(tears commence at 2:47 – aww!)

And now I promise I will shut up about him.  (maybe)  And how dapper does Ryan Seacrest look in a tux?  Dapper!

Anyway, onto workout news.  I jumped out of bed again today (well, not necessarily jumped, but you know what I mean) to go to the gym.  I did all cardio today at the gym – a 10-15-20 workout (10 bike, 15 treadmill, 20 elliptical) and I even ran for a minute WITHOUT PAIN!  Yes, a whole minute.  Aw yeah, the PT is working my friends.  I really do believe it.  In no time I will be running again, I think.  We’ll see.  After that I came home and did Summer Arms – 3 sets of 20 tricep dips.  Fun stuff.  Overall, good workout.

And now I will leave you now.  I have some things to do before I play hooky tomorrow!  Have a great day!

Questions for you …
- Did you watch Idol?
- Any good Memorial Day weekend plans?

Work Funk

Hey there!  Happy Hump Day!

I am seriously contemplating taking the rest of the week off, because I am useless this week.  I hate saying that, but golly gee, I am literally watching the clock all day just counting the minutes until it’s an acceptable time to leave.  I think I need a vacation.  I haven’t taken one yet this year, and I think I am going a little bonkers because of it.  See, my job tends to be feast or famine – when I am busy, I can’t breathe; but when I’m not so busy, I am SOOO NOT BUSY.  The latter drives me absolutely bonkers and renders me completely useless.  I would much rather be crazy busy all the time.  Hmm, I shouldn’t say that too loudly, should I?

Lucky for me, there is vacation in sight.  Next week I am only working a 3 day week thanks to Memorial Day, and then Friday I am off for our annual family trip to Sanibel Island.  I’ve never been so excited to go to Sanibel – which means I am really in need of a vacation.  I am also taking the following Monday and Tuesday off.  So that will be nice, and will hopefully rejuvenate how I am feeling about things in the ol’ office.  And then in July we are taking a trip up to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia, which I am super duper excited about.  Normally our vacations tend to be beachy-type vacations, but a mountain/woodsy vacation sounded kind of great.  Think white water rafting, hiking, zip lining, etc.  I am super excited about that.  So hopefully that will knock me out of my work funk.  We’ll see.

Today I jumped out of bed to go to the gym.  Why?  Because a) I haven’t been all week, and b) I was eager to finish my book (Laura Caldwell’s Claim of Innocence – a good murder trial mystery) at the gym on the elliptical this morning.  I was trying to finish it last night, but with only 20 pages to go I could barely keep my eyes open, so I opted to finish it on the elliptical.  I am telling you, I LOVE my Nook.  It makes me read supersonic fast.  I’ve read 3 books since I got it a little over a month ago.  I very rarely read 3 books in less than 2 months.  And no, I’m not a slow reader, I just don’t read often.  Though, I have been gyming a lot lately, and I always take my Nook to the gym, so that must be it.

Anyhow… this morning was my first morning at the gym this week and it felt good!!  Monday I slept in and Tuesday I had an early morning PT appointment, so today was my first opportunity to sweat and it was great!  I did a 15-15-15 workout – 15 on the bike, 15 on the elliptical and 15 on the treadmill walking.  Good stuff.  I also started a new book during my cardio time – Tinsley Mortimer’s Southern Charm.  So far so good!  (I heart chick lit)

I opted out of doing arms at the gym and instead went home and did them.  There were too many people in the free weights section and didn’t feel like being social, so I did it at home.  I’ve missed a few days of my Summer Arms Challenge, so I started with the Monday workout – 3 sets of 12 each of Tricep Push Ups (girl style), Bicep Curls and Tricep Kickbacks.  Good stuff!

And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention last night’s episode of American Idol (since I’ve been talking about incessantly lately).  Last night’s ep was a little lackluster for me until this happened…

PURE GENIUSNESS!!!  They couldn’t have picked a better, more tailor-made song for Phillip’s post-show single than “Home.”  WOW.  I got major goosebumps while watching it.  My friend Amanda was watching it and she was ahead of me (I watched it on the DVR delayed) and she texted me and said, “you might cry at Phillip’s song.”  I actually didn’t cry, which is shocking considering I cry at most everything that moves me.  This performance was SO fantastic and pretty much sealed the deal that he is going to take the crown tonight.  In my eyes, anyway.  And can’t you totally hear this song as the song of the summer?  No?  Am I just weird?  I love him.  Whether he wins or loses, we will see much more of him in the near future.  YAY!

OK, I need to wrap this up now and do something productive (I actually have a meeting - woo!).  Have a great rest of the day!

Questions for you …
- What are you reading right now?
- What did you think of Phillp’s performance?

Odd Office Games

Hey hey!  It’s Tuesday and I just got to work (after 10 – oops).  I seriously contemplated just playing hooky today and not coming in at all (you don’t know how badly I wanted to do that!), but me being the superstar employee I am (hee) decided against it and came on in.  Yeah, I know I’m so good.  But here’s the thing, my entire team is in Connecticut, so really, would anyone know I wasn’t here?  Nope.  Argh, I should have stayed home.

I was so late because today was a physical therapy day!  And it was a great session!  I mean, it wasn’t really any different than the last two I’ve been to, BUT my Physical Therapist said that she noticed improvement in the strength of my foot!!!  She said “wow, you aren’t dragging your foot at all, I’m impressed.”  So I think it’s working!  She said she could still detect a lot of weakness in my left hip (we’re working on that), but she said that the foot and ankle strengthening exercises seemed to be helping me with my foot drag.  YAY!  You know what that means: less foot drag = less shoes that look like this.  So, here’s hoping that in the next few sessions I get even stronger!  That just made me so happy this morning.

What else is going on?  Not too much.  I didn’t work out again today (boo), since I had an early PT appointment.  Though, I think I can count PT today as working out, because I was huffing and puffing.  I was doing all of my exercises with ankle weights and/or heavy resistance bands, so my legs and buns were burnin’.   Or should I say leg and bun (not plural).  I’m still slightly worried that I am going to have mismatched legs and buns at the end of this, since I am only working the one side.  Case in point – I did a set of lunges today just on my left side.  Hmm…I should even that out later, huh?

Did anyone catch The Bachelorette last night?  I SO don’t want to watch this season because Emily kind of gets on my nerves, but I just can’t help myself.  It’s like a train wreck that you just can’t pry your eyes from.  I reluctantly watched last night and was happy I watched when everything was said and done.

We have a little game here at work.  When the 25 Bachelors (or Bachelorettes) are announced, we all crowd around a computer and look at the pictures and the bios and make picks solely based on their picture and their brief bio. (yes, we are very busy at work)  And then we watch the show and find out what doofuses we’ve picked.  Case in point, I picked Tony (the single dad who had that really awkward moment last night) because he looked nice in his picture.  The first night, he was the dude who brought the glass slipper.  Really?  Sheesh.  Bad pick.  Other great picks from the last several years – Jade picked a girl from one of the Bachelor seasons whose claim to fame was being able to bite through a soda can.  Classy!  And she also picked Jake “Eventual Douchebag” Pavelka during Ali’s season.  Me, I always seem to pick guys who don’t go very far, so I’m not very good at this.  Although, I did win during Jillian’s season by picking Ed.  Although, he left and came back, so I don’t know if that counts or not.

The sad thing is we do this for ALL reality shows, not just The Bachelor.  We do it for American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance (Thursday!!) and other shows that I can’t think of right now.  Who’s left in the American Idol pool this year?  THIS GIRL!  Why?  Because I picked this guy to win from the beginning.

Phillip Phillips - yes.
Cuz I’m SMART.  He’s so gonna win!  I’ve never won an American Idol pool before!  And no, we don’t bet money or win anything.  Just bragging rights.  We're nerdy like that.

Alright, I’m going to stop talking about our embarrassing office games now and go get some real work done.  Have a superb day!

Questions for you …
Does anyone else “bet” on reality shows? (or are we the only weirdos?)
Who worked out today?
