Yesterday I decided that I would jump back on the horse and start my slow and steady return to running. After being sidelined by tendinitis in February of last year and then being pregnant for the remainder of the year, it’s been a long while since I’ve done anything but walk or ellipticize so I was a little apprehensive about getting back out there.
I decided to use the Couch to 5K program as my way to ease back into running, start at square one, because I knew that it was a safe and effective way to get my endurance and mileage back. I downloaded the C25K Free app on my iTouch to make things a little easier (best app I’ve downloaded since Words With Friends!) and yesterday I tested it out.
So how did it go? It went GREAT!!!!!
Week One of Couch to 5K consists of a 5 minute walking warm up and then 60 seconds of running and 90 seconds of walking repeated for 20 minutes (8 times) and then a 5 minute walking cool down. This was a perfect place to start. 60 seconds of running was plenty for me and actually allowed me to play with my speed a little bit. (Words I have never uttered before in my life. Speed? Who am I?)
Yeah, speed. Probably not something to mess with right out of the gate, but I felt so good to be running I tested the waters to see if I could push myself to go a little faster than S-L-O-W. I’m not sure how fast I was going, but I can assure you it was no faster than a fast person’s walk (I told you, I’m slow). Anyway, I did a little less than 2 miles in the 30 minutes of walking/running, which isn’t too shabby considering it’s been a long long long time.
I’m happy to report I had zero ankle pain. Apparently a great cure for tendinitis is not running for nearly a year. The physical therapy helps too. Either way, I was so happy that my ankle didn’t bother me. Another thing that didn’t hurt - my calves. Remember my fiery calf pain I was having while I was pregnant? That’s gone, thank goodness!
It’s funny how running is kind of infectious. I literally cannot wait to go out again tonight to do Day Two of the plan. I think I’m on my way!! Maybe I’ll even sign up for a 5K in the first part of this year!
Alright, that’s all for now. Hope you’re having a fabulous day!!
Questions for you …
- Did you run today?
- Is anyone else doing C25K?

YAY! Great work girl! I ran yesterday (intervals) and to my car afterwork when it was POURING outside and I was sans jacket! Poor planning on my part.
ReplyDeleteShort run today, only 2.5 miles. Have had a sinus cold that has left me with bad post nasal drip. Consequently it's trying really hard to go into a chest cold and has left my throat and windpipe so sore that they hurt when I run. It's not in my chest because my breathing is fine, at least for now. Too much coughing while I ran today too. Called it at 2.5 miles and did 11.5 miles on the bike instead- much less exertion on the bike.
ReplyDeleteI really don't have time to be sick, so this is really annoying. I have crashed before midnight every day this week and it's really putting a crimp in my study time. Grrrrr.
So glad you are back on the running game. I'm sure it feels good to move without the extra weight of the baby too.
Keep it up!
