Coming Up: Watermelon 5K

I know you missed me yesterday.  Haha.  Just kidding, I‘m sure you didn’t, but I missed writing!  I was literally on the phone all day long for work and had no time for much of anything.  Thank God I have the most perfect and cooperative baby who just chilled out and napped (!!) while I was working.  She’s seriously the best. 

Even though I was on the phone all day long with work, I did get my Best Body Bootcamp workout in.  I was on the phone from 9:00-11:30, then at 11:32 I packed up Jillian and ran upstairs and completed Workout B of Week 2.  Yeah, seriously.  I spent 30 minutes on that while Jillian giggled at me doing one legged squats and other funny exercises I never do, fed her and then was back on the phone at 1:00.  Talk about squeezing in a workout.  I’m glad I did it though.  It felt good to get up and move. 

Today, I’m sad to report, I did not get up and workout.  I was supposed to go to the gym and run 2/2 intervals for 40 minutes.  That didn’t happen.  But it will happen tomorrow, I promise.  Even though I say I don’t like to work out on weekends…  I’m going to make it happen though.  I’m also going to complete Tina’s optional Workout C (the Core one I did last Saturday), because it was kind of fun.  And Lord knows my core needs a good workout.  J

Did I mention that I am running a 5K on the 4th of July?  It’s the annual Watermelon 5K, which a group of us has done every year for the last few years.

It’s kind of tradition for us to get up, do a 5K and then go out for pancakes on the 4th.  So that’s what we’re doing.  I’m really looking forward to it.  I’m trying to decide if I want to try and run it (intervals, of course) or just walk with the gang.  We will see!

How Many Steps?


Hello, hello!  I am a little miffed at the moment.  I went out for lunch today, and usually on my lunch outings I listen to a local radio show (I like talk radio, I’m weird) that usually cracks me up.  Today I get in the car, all excited to listen to the show and it’s gone!  In its place is a super lame show that basically just plays news clips from TV.  Lame.  So now I’m on a mad search to find out what happened to my show.  I know, such problems I have.

This morning my alarm went off and I had a mental tug of war – do I get up and go to the gym, or do I lay here and sleep longer?  After talking it out in my head for a few minutes, I was wide awake, so I decided to just go to the gym.  I’m so glad I did.  I did 45 minutes, 2/1 intervals, while reading my new book (Summer Rental by Mary Kay Andrews – it’s slightly fulfilling my vacation needs for right now).  Good workout!  And I’m happy to report that I was not sore from yesterday’s BBB workout, so that is a happy thing. 


So, the company I work for has recently implemented a Wellness program that encourages a healthy, active lifestyle amongst its employees.  I am part of the “Wellness Champions” group who gets to pilot some of the new programs that they are rolling out.  So in the mail last week I received a pedometer, and they are starting a program where if you track your steps with the pedometer, and report out on your daily steps through a website, at the end of the quarter if you receive x number of points through the amount of daily steps you take, they will reimburse you for your gym membership.  (that was a long sentence with lots of commas)  How cool is that?!  Free gym membership, just for wearing a pedometer and tracking your daily steps?  Sign me up!! 

So I clipped on my pedometer on Monday (note: after my 3 mile run at the gym, fail) and I was shocked at how little steps I take during the day!!!  Through this program you get rewarded for taking any number of steps, but you earn considerably more points if you walk more than 7,000 steps per day.  I thought, “I’m active, I walk around a lot, this will be a piece of cake to get more than 7,000 steps per day.”  Uh, yeah, no.  Since I didn’t wear my pedo to the gym on Monday morning, I missed out on a lot of steps, because I only ended up with about 3,500 steps on Monday.  Really?  Mondays I’m in the office, so I am basically tethered to my desk and phone all day.  I get up to walk to the bathroom and the printer a few times a day and that’s it – hence the 3,500 steps on Monday.  I was a little shocked.

Tuesday, since I work at home, I was able to get more steps throughout the day, and I wore my pedo on my walk with Jillian and during my BBB workout (that counts), so I got just over 7,000 yesterday.  Today, I had 5,000 by 7am, since I wore my pedo to the gym.  But it was a huge wake up call for me to see how much exercise contributes to the number of steps you take per day (duh), and your overall “wellness.”  So I think this program is going to be a good one.  I am definitely going to be making sure I get at least 7,000 per day so that I can rack up the points and get me a free gym membership.  Free is for me.

Testing Out the Jogging Stroller

Hello!  It’s taken me all day, but I’m finally getting a post up.  Woo, long day! 

Today I had a chance to take our new jogging stroller out for a spin. Jillian and I went for a short 25 minute walk this morning before it got too hot to be outside.  I really liked it!  The wheels on it make for a smoother ride, so when you go over bumps it’s not traumatic for Jillian.  I even tried jogging a bit with it.  Not long at all – like 30 second intervals tops – but I just wanted to get a feel for how it felt to run with a stroller.  I’m not sure that I would make going for a run with the stroller a regular thing (for reasons explained below), but going out for a walk with a couple of jogging breaks, sure.

Yeah, I'm a little selfish when it comes to my runs.  I love the fact that when I go for a run/walk (either outside or on the treadmill) it's "me" time.  Me, my music, my feet, my book (if I'm on a treadmill) and that's it.  So running with a stroller and a baby might not be the best for me.  Plus I'm super clumsy and have horrible visions of me biting it and the stroller rolling away.  OMG, can you imagine?  

After our walk, we made our way upstairs to complete Workout A of Week 2 of Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp.  I was really looking forward to my workout, and it was a good one.  After I was done I felt strong and very glad that I had my workouts done for the day.  Tomorrow its back to the gym for another interval run on the treadmill (and I will be starting a new book too!).  Woohoo!

Excited


Hey-o!  Can you tell I have been watching Bret Michael’s Rock My RV show?  Love him.  (The “hey-o” is a catchphrase of his, if you’re wondering.)

Anywho…

It’s Monday!  Another week of work, another week of Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp, and this week is my triumphant return to the gym!  I wasn’t able to get to the gym at all last week (except Monday) because Hubs was out of town, so this morning I was so ready to get on the treadmill and run.  It felt so super good. 

Since I took a week off from the treadmill, I didn’t want to move forward to Week 3 in my 10K training plan, so I am doing Week 2 of the plan over again.  So today’s workout was 2/1 intervals (2 walking, 1 running) for 36 minutes.  I did a 5 minute warm up and cool down to make it a 46 minute workout, which actually ended up being a 49 minute workout because I was really into my book (I have about 20 pages left – I heart reading on the treadmill).  Can I just say that I want to stay at 2/1 intervals forever?  I love them.  They are easy and feel really good to me and my ankles.  I know taking it “easy” isn’t going to help me fulfill my wildest workout wishes, but I am just loving them.  I’ll stick with them this week, according to the plan, and then I will move on.

I’m still sticking to the Tuesday/Thursday schedule for my strength workouts from Tina’s Bootcamp, and can I just say that I am really excited for tomorrow’s workout?  I am actually looking forward to a strength training workout.  Isn’t that nuts?  A week ago I was kind of dreading these.  This week I’m all excited about it.  How great is that? 

Why am I so excited?  Because I feel like I am seeing results.  I know I’m probably not really seeing results in my body this soon, but I feel like I am.  I feel stronger, more toned, more confident.  Just the mental aspect of this strength training is doing wonders for me already, only after a week, and that’s pretty awesome.  And I do have to say I am having a small victory today.  I am wearing some pre-pregnancy pants right now, so that in and of itself is a huge accomplishment.  So woohoo! 

Over the weekend my in-laws came over bearing gifts.  One of them, a jogging stroller!!  It’s no BOB, but it’s a stroller that I can run with and this makes me pretty excited.  It’s got the cool shock absorbing wheels, it’s sleek, I really can’t wait to use it.  I’m thinking about strapping Jillian in and taking for a test drive tomorrow.  I’ll let you know how it goes.  I may or may not run with it.  I haven’t decided if I want to run with her or not, but if we’re on a walk and I feel like breaking into a jog, at least I know I have the right stroller for it now.  Yay!

Morning Walk With Jade

Hey hey happy Saturday!

My day started great with a walk on the trail with Jade and our little girls!  I got to test these puppies out!

I have not seen or talked to Jade in ages, which is crazy since we used to see each other more than we saw our husbands when we were  sitting next to each other at work. Seriously, we spent at least 40 hours a week together. Now that she has a new job and a new desk, I barely see her. Boo! So it was great that we were able to get together today and catch up. We had lots to talk about!

We met up before it got too too hot out, although let's face it, it's summer in Florida so it's never not hot. We did a 2.25 mile walk with our strollers in about 45 minutes which allowed us to gab and catch up. It was fun. Afterwards her little girl played in the park and Jillian ooh'ed and aah'ed over all of the kids and fun stuff at the park. I wish I had had my camera!

When I got home Jillian got a bath and then it was time for peas!

It's safe to say that peas are a hit.

I also completed Workout C of Tina's Best Body Bootcamp. It was an "optional" core workout and it was good stuff. I was just as sweaty after that workout as I was after my walk outside in the 90 degree heat. It was no joke. So good though!! I'm glad I did it.

Now Jillian is conked out - it was an eventful morning, walk, bath, peas....




And it's time for a shower for me and some chillin' out with Hubs. He got back last night from California and its so good to have him home! Have a great weekend!

New Running Shoes (Again)


Friday, Friday, Friday – woo!  (can you tell I’m happy it’s Friday?)

I don’t have a workout to talk about today because I didn’t do one.  BOO.  I was going to do Tina’s optional Core strength workout today, but Jillian decided that she wanted to wake up and eat at 3am (she hasn’t done that in months), so I was up from 3-3:45 with her and then I couldn’t go back to sleep until 4:30.  Ugh.  So no workout yet.  Maybe after work.

I forgot to mention it the other day, but I bought new running shoes!  I’m sure you were just dying to know that.  If you recall, I bought some Nikes about a month ago and they kind of suck.  I ran in them once and they made my right ankle (the one without tendinitis) hurt.  So now those shoes are designated as good Disney walking shoes.  I should have known better than to buy them at Sports Authority with no supervision. 

I always (well almost always) buy my shoes at a local running store called Track Shack.  They have expert shoe people there who know what kinds of shoes to recommend to me and my funky feet.  (not funky in a smelly gross way, just funky because I run weird and have strangely high arches)  I always feel like I get the perfect pair of shoes when I go there. 

The woman who helped me was definitely a hard core runner and her first question to me was “how many miles do you run a week?”  Ummm, like 5?  I felt a little inadequate after that question, so I blathered on about just having a baby and just getting back into running.  She didn’t seem to care too much.  I told her I needed cushioning shoes because I under-pronate (or is it over-pronate?) and because that’s what I always get and they work well for me.  She brought out two pairs of Nikes (booo, no more Nikes!), a pair of New Balance which were neon green and pink (so cute) and some purple Asics.  None of those worked. 

I told her that my all time favorite running shoe was the now defunct Adidas Supernova Cushion.  This is the shoe I wore back in the day (2007) when I was a running fiend and I miss them terribly.  And ya know what she happened to be wearing at the time?  The new cushioning Adidas Supernovas, which are now called Adidas Supernova Glides.  No way jose!  So she got me some of those to try on and it was heaven on my feet so I bought them.  I cannot wait to play with them. 

I’m sure she was totally rolling her eyes at me though because every pair she brought out I was like “ooh, those are so pretty!” or “I love purple!”  See, real runners don’t buy their shoes based on how cute they are, they buy them because they work.  Apparently I’m not a real runner…yet.  I’ll get back there.  But these are pretty right? 



Anyway, I cannot wait to test these new shoes out.  I’m hoping to go this weekend.  Hubs is flying back tonight (he’s been out of town in California all week for a wedding – lucky duck) so I should finally be able to get out and do some exercise outside.  Woohoo!

Peas


So last night when I went to bed I forgot to set my alarm clock.  It’s a good thing I have a baby alarm clock, or else I might have slept all day.  My goal was to wake up in the 6 o’clock hour to complete Workout B of Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp, but that didn’t happen in the 6 o’clock hour for reason above.  But I did eventually make it up to the Insanity Room to complete my workout.  More on that in a minute. 

Can we talk about how sore I still am from Tuesday’s workout?  Sheesh.  My butt and the upper part of my shoulder are just sore.  Apparently when I work out these parts on my own (which is rare) I am not doing the right moves.  These moves that Tina gave us make you hurt so good.  I think I am finally becoming a fan of strength training.  Right on! 

Around 10 o’clock Jillian and I made our way up to the Insanity Room.

I warmed up with some light cardio (read: jumping jax and running up and down the stairs – hey you gotta do what you can with a baby) and then got started.  Workout B contained more supersets like Workout A – 4 sets of exercises, 10 reps each, 3 sets.  It took me about 40 minutes to complete everything and I worked my legs, my butt, my shoulders, all the parts that hurt, and I’m sure are going to hurt even more tomorrow.  But again, hurt so good.  Jillian laughed at me as I was doing the moves and got a workout of her own chewing on her Minnie toy. 



Afterwards I stretched and then strapped Jillian up for a walk around the block .  Mental note, walks in the 11 o’clock hour in Florida during the summer are never a good idea.  It’s HOT out there.  But she didn't mind.


Afterwards we came home and Jillian ate peas.  Peas!  My baby is eating peas.  I don’t even eat peas.  I’m pretty sure she is not going to be a picky eater.  So far, she likes everything we give her.  Here’s hoping it stays that way

Unhealthy Obsessions

Yeah, I’m sore.  Apparently I used muscles I haven’t used in a very long time yesterday during my Best Body Bootcamp workout.  Mostly muscles in my butt, which I never work out (but should!), so that makes sense.  The other thing that hurts – my armpits and the tops of my shoulders.  All signs that the workout was a good one that hit muscles I very rarely work out.  Awesome! 

This morning I didn’t get out of bed until 7:00.  I was going to try and get up and do some Insanity, but I just didn’t want to.  I stayed up uber late to watch the end of the Spurs/Heat game (overtime, Spurs lost, boo!) so when the alarm went off at 6 I said “hell no” and went back to sleep.  So no cardio for me this morning.  Maybe this evening I can make something happen.

OK, so I have two new unhealthy obsessions. 

1)   Candy Crush.  Have you played this?  It’s an app, it’s a game, it’s highly addictive.  Amanda got me hooked on it and it’s becoming a problem.  I am obsessed with it.  And I hate it, it makes me want to throw my phone, but I cannot stop playing it.

2)   Pretty Wicked Moms.  There is a new show on Lifetime that I caught the tail end of over the weekend and I instantly got hooked.  It’s so, so bad but I found myself watching it.  And then another episode came on and I watched it.  And then I found myself DVRing the series.  Ugh.  It’s basically a rip off of the Real Housewives (I’m happy to say I have never watched those) centering around a group of moms – one is the Queen Bee, one is the Alpha Mom, one is the New Girl… etc and it all centers around how fake they are and how the backstab each other.  It’s so stupid, but like I said, addictive.  The Queen Bee chick, I hope to God she is acting because no one can be that… whatever she is.  Can’t explain it.  It’s just bad.  Does anyone watch this?  Shar, it comes on after Dance Moms, maybe you’ve caught it?  J


I wish my obsessions could be in the form of healthy eating or working out incessantly, but alas no.  Instead they are on dumb phone games and really stupid “reality shows.”  And Diet Coke.  Have I mentioned I fell off the wagon?  In a bad way.  Ugh.

Back in the Insanity Room


This morning I completed my very first strength workout from Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp and I would just like to go on record saying I am going to be SO sore tomorrow.  And I am excited by this.  As you all know, strength training is not my strong suit (even though I know I need to do more of it), so I used muscles today that I don’t normally use when I run or walk or ellipticize.  Whoo, it’s going to be rough tomorrow.  But in the best “I think this is working” way!

The workout consisted of 4 supersets - 2 exercises per set, 10 reps each, 3 sets -  targeting all of my muscles.  Wowee, it was good.  And I actually went up to the “Insanity Room” to do it.

I haven’t stepped foot in the “Insanity Room” (aka an empty room in our house where we do Insanity - I guess we could call it a “gym” but “Insanity Room” has a better ring) in a really long time.  It was kind of dusty.  Ha, kidding.  


Anyway, I started my workout with just a short warm up - 20 jumping jacks, a minute of running in place - and then I did the Fit Test that Tina provides to see just how out of shape I am.  I’ll do this Fit Test periodically to see how I have progressed through bootcamp (kind of like Insanity).  I actually surprised myself.  I didn’t think I’d be able to do a Wall Sit for more than a couple of seconds, turns out I can do it for a minute.  Go me!  The Fit Test was a great warm up to today’s workout.

After that I did Workout A, which was awesome and, like I said, will leave me very sore.  I need to do my 20 minutes of cardio still, but I figured since I can’t make it to the gym I would take Jillian (whose feet are currently in her mouth - hee) for a walk once the sun tucks behind a cloud (it’s way too hot and sunny to take her out right now).   Can’t let this little face get burned.

I'm Going to Bootcamp

Hi there!  It’s another Monday again.  Crazy. 

My Monday started at the gym.  Today is actually the only day this week that I am going to get to the gym because Hubs and my schedules are crazy this week.  I am crying inside because of this because I don’t want to lose my running momentum that I have gained over the last couple of weeks.  So I’m going to try (try try) to do Insanity as my cardio to keep up my stamina.  We’ll see how that goes.  I might have a heart attack from it, but at least I tried.  Also this week …

Yes!  After reading about Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp for months now, I am finally going to be participating.  So excited!  I just printed off all of my workouts for this week, so I am kind of excited to get that started too.  Because you know how bad I am about strength training on my own, so at least now I have customized workouts made my a personal trainer that I can follow.  I’m sure I’ll be nice and sore after the first workout. 

Anyway, back to the gym this morning.  I was not feeling it at all.  I don’t think I was actually awake until about half way through my 30 minute workout on the treadmill.  It was a weird morning.  Anyway, I did 30 minutes – 2 min walking, 1 min running, because that just feels good right now – and headed home.  Short and sweet.  At least I did something.

Since I did my 2nd Blogiversary post on Friday, I didn’t get to talk about our fun outing to Magic Kingdom on Jillian’s 5 month birthday last week.  We had a blast.  And Jillian got to meet some more characters. 





Super fun.  On Saturday night we met some friends out at Epcot and hung out.  They have a 2 year old, so Jillian got to hang out with another kid.  It was really cute.  I have pics from then, but just realized that they are still on my camera and my camera is at home.  Fail.  I’ll share those tomorrow, along with some pics from Father’s Day and all that fun stuff.  So stay tuned.

Alright, I’ve got some work to do.  Later today I’m learning about a new wellness program that we have going on here at work.  They’re sending me a pedometer and they just loaded some nifty software on my computer, so I’m anxious to hear what it’s all about.  Fun!

My 2nd Blogiversary!

It’s FRIDAY!  How exciting is that? 

Today is also my BLOGIVERSARY!  2 years, if you can believe it!  I can’t.  I honestly didn’t think I would still be keeping up with this thing a full two years later, but here I am!  Almost 700 posts later I am still writing and hoping someone out there is reading.  Haha.  Eh, I’d write even if no one was reading because I just enjoy the outlet to talk about myself.  Hehe. 

In honor of today I thought I would share some fond memories of posts past.  Not the boring ones where I had nothing to talk about, but the fun ones with pictures and meaning.  Yeah, there’s not a lot of those, but here are a few faves…

I started this blog because I wanted to document my journey into getting back into shape through doing the workout series, Insanity.  Throughout the first couple months of the blog I talked about Insanity and my experience with it.  This post was my review of Insanity and my personal results.  Hmm, makes me want to do it all over again.  I want those abs and arms again…

I struggle with calling myself a “runner” sometimes.  When you think of running you think of people moving fast.  When I run, I don’t move fast.  My feet move faster than if I was walking, but it’s hardly running to a normal person.  I’m not sure why I am SO SLOW, it’s just my nature, and I’m okay with that.  This post delves into the question of “can I really call myself a runner if I run/walk or run really slow?”  Spoiler: the answer is YES!!!

This night started my obsession with tobyMac music.  Before this night at Night of Joy I was oblivious, now I am enlightened and always have a rockin’ running playlist.  Amen!


This post just makes me laugh.  These are the official race photos from the 2011 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Relay I did.  This is when I discovered that my hands and arms have a mind of their own when I run.  Hilarious.

Now that it’s summer I’m so in the mood to go on vacation, especially after reading this post about our cruise that we took in November 2011.  (that seems so long ago!)

This was a personal favorite 5K of mine because it was the first time in a long time that I ran an entire 5K without stopping to walk.  And I didn’t even plan that.  And I wore cool knee socks.
